Woody Madera

Believe it or not one of the most creative minds to hit the scratch DJ scene this millenium doesn’t hail from the Bronx or Brooklyn but infact Burnley in the UK. DJ Woody aka Woody Madera has invented a whole host of groundbreaking scratch and turntable techniques, helped Vestax to design the Worlds first ever musical turntable instrument & has 5 major UK and World DJ titles to his name.

With 3 critically acclaimed mix albums and an impressive CV of collaborative recordings Woody has worked with the industries most revered producers. He’s toured with Madlib (Stones Throw), recorded with Aquasky (Moving Shadow/Passenger) & Tim Simenon (Bomb The Bass) and was a member of DJ Vadim’s world famous touring outfit The Russian Percussion making up one quarter of Ninjatunes’ supergroup One Self.

In the last 8 years he has toured the World relentlessly making over 500 shows across 40 countries & has shared the stage with many of musics biggest names including Eminem, Beastie Boys, Cypress Hill, The Black Eyed Peas, De La Soul, DJ Shadow & Snoop Doggy Dog. Woody utilizes his onstage experience, renowned turntablist flare and broad musical repertoire to optimum effect in order to devastate the dancefloor.

On top of his regular international club shows Woody is the DJ for latin hip hop superstar and 2007 Grammy Nominee Mala Rodriguez (Universal Records) and is currently working in collaboration with Barcelona’s 20 piece Original Jazz Orchestra for their 2009 shows. Once again taking his skills to new audiences across the World.

As the old proverb goes, “Judge a man by company he keeps!”

black t shirt

UK Streetwear label Dephect is based on a shared love of Hip Hop culture and graphic design, so its not surprising that when they found out about Woody Madera’s Turntables in Technicolor project, they were inspired to produce a run of limited edition T Shirts to celebrate the launch of the show.
Dephect is now an international brand in its own right, progressing via graphic collaborations with unknown and established artists alike, and they’ve gone all out for this project creating a mini-blog within their website.

The T Shirts are available online from the Dephect website (where you can also find a list of stockists).  A lucky few will even be able to pick one up direct from Mr Madera himself as he’ll be packing a few before every show.

Check the video for a sneak preview of Woody’s brand new AV Show ‘Turntables in Technicolor” (touring the UK and Europe throughout February and March 2010).  The clip is taken from the start of the show (with the in-set camera on the deck and mixer to show you what Woody is doing with his hands) and gives a quick insight into what promises to be an incredibly entertaining show both musically and visually.

Showing off his skill as a graphic designer, Woody takes a Python-esque style to the start of the show – which gives a rather vintage / old school introduction to a show which pushes the boundarise of the technology in use by one of the most creative, innovative and inventive DJs the UK has ever produced.

‘Training and working as a graphic designer and then in television for years before DJing became a fulltime career, you’d think i’d have ventured in the world of AV before now. Truth is i’ve been eager to get on it for years but the DVDJ’s never did it for me, now technology has caught up for those wanting the authentic vinyl feel to scratch AV, i’m in there like swimwear.
Welcome Turntables In Technicolor, my 2 lifelong passions combined DJing and Visuals….’

Hot on the heels of his mix CD for Aquasky’s Passenger Records label (Woody Madera vs The Bodysnatchers), the call from yet another UK label came in offering Woody the opportunity to release what will be the 2nd production under the new Woody Madera moniker.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of releases, Jack to Phono have asked Woody Madera to produce a special mix to mark the occasion.
Largely uptempo dancefloor funk based beats (acts like Dr Rubberfunk, Diesler, The Bass Snatchers, Blue Foundation, Mooch, Random Heroes and Beatphreaks all make an appearance) he’ll be reinterpreting the labels funkiest moments and infusing some of his own funk into the mix.
The CD is due for release around Christmas, but in the meantime, get your listening gear round this fine mix from the master mixer madera!

Where’s Woody?

Where’s Woody?  Its a question that often arises about one of the UK’s most respected and yet seldom seen DJs.  They seek him here, they seek him there, but of late, the place to find Woody is most likely somewhere in the Latin speaking world as he tours with world with First Lady of Hispanic Hip Hop Mala Rodrigues.

Following on from his years of touring with Russian Percussion and One Self, demand for Woody’s skills as both turntablist and party DJ have led him far and wide, and once again kept him away from home shores.
The last 2 years has taken Woody to across the globe to countries including Chile, Mexico, Argentina, Columbia, Puerto Rico and Costa Rica, a tour of North America, as well as all over Europe and regular trips to Spain.  He’s walked down the red carpet in Las Vegas, and performed at the MTV Grammies (where Mala was nominated) and regularly headlined festivals with crowds of over 40,000 in his role as warm up DJ and turntable musician for the band.
He’s currently performing alongside a 20 piece jazz orchestra as seen in the video above.

Mala also appears on Nelly Furtado’s new Spanish album – you may not like Nelly F, but for those of you who aren;t so up on your female Latin Rap stars (which is probably quite a few!) its a good indication of how big this thing is…

The lad from Burnley has done good…
